The six sections of a biodata

Almost every marriage biodata is built from six blocks. Personal details introduce you — name, date/time/place of birth, height, complexion, education and profession. Astrology or religious details vary by community: rashi, nakshatra, gotra and manglik status for Hindus and Jains; sect or denomination and religious practice for Muslim, Christian and Sikh families. Education and career show where you're settled. Family details cover parents, siblings, native place and family values. Contact is a mobile number and city. A photo — a recent solo portrait — completes it. Keep all six on a single A4 page.

Privacy — what to leave OUT

A biodata gets forwarded on WhatsApp to people you don't know, so treat it as a public document. Never include your Aadhaar number, PAN, or any government ID — they're a gift to identity thieves and serve no purpose in matchmaking. Skip your full home address; your city and a mobile number are enough for a family to reach out, and you can share the address privately once talks are serious. Leave out bank details, account numbers and income proofs entirely. Be cautious with your exact salary — profession is expected, precise figures are not. If you're worried about your number circulating widely, use one you can change or a family elder's number. The goal is enough to start a genuine conversation, and nothing that could be misused.

Frequently asked questions

What details should be included in a marriage biodata?

Personal details (name, birth date/time/place, height, education, work), astrology or religious details for your community, family details (parents, siblings, native place), a contact number and a recent photo — all on one A4 page.

What should you NOT put in a marriage biodata?

Never include your Aadhaar or PAN number, bank or card details, or your full home address. A biodata is forwarded widely, so keep out anything that could be misused — a city and mobile number are enough.

Should I mention my income or salary?

Your profession is expected, but exact salary is best left out of the biodata and discussed later. Mentioning your role, qualifications and whether you're settled is usually enough.

How long should a marriage biodata be?

One A4 page. Everything a family screens on — personal, astrology, family and contact details plus a photo — should fit on a single, well-organised page.

Do all communities include astrology details?

No. Hindu and Jain biodatas usually carry rashi, nakshatra, gotra and manglik status, while Muslim, Christian and Sikh biodatas drop astrology and instead note sect or denomination and religious practice.
